Toptal is a network of freelance specialists that includes management consultants and AI consultants. It does not sell a chief AI officer service, but it is a common route for companies that want to try senior AI help before committing1.

Best for: Companies that want to try a senior AI consultant hourly or part-time within days, with a trial of up to two weeks before paying.

Not the right fit for: Companies that want a provider with a defined chief AI officer offer.

How hiring through Toptal works

Toptal says fewer than 3% of applicants are accepted and publishes its screening steps (language and personality, a skill review, a live screening and a test project) with the share of applicants passing each. It says matches take under 24 hours on average and that clients can typically hire AI consultants in about 48 hours1.

Each engagement begins with a trial of up to two weeks. A client that is not satisfied is not billed, and Toptal may offer another consultant for a new trial. It reports that 98% of clients hire after the trial. Consultants can be hired hourly, part-time or full-time, and Toptal can manage a whole project through its managed delivery and consulting services1.

On its management consulting page, Toptal says cost depends on the talent's location, the project's complexity and size, seniority and the commitment required. It does not publish rates2.

Published evidence

The AI consultants page shows consultant profiles, some of which describe roadmap work for leadership teams, but no named client engagements with results.

Strengths and limits

Strengths

  • A trial of up to two weeks; a client that is not satisfied is not billed.
  • Publishes its screening steps and the share of applicants passing each.
  • Hourly, part-time or full-time, with managed delivery available for whole projects.

Limits

  • No dedicated chief AI officer offer; candidates are presented as AI consultants.
  • Rates are not published.
  • A freelance arrangement fits advice and projects better than an executive seat with authority.

Choose another option if: You want a candidate presented specifically as a fractional CAIO, or a replacement guarantee that runs beyond the trial.

Pricing

Not published. Depends on location, complexity, seniority and commitment.
